County Regulations

All of the homes in Rincon Trails are in the CR-2 zone. There are a some notable regulations in our CR-2 zone regarding chickens:

18.23.010 which references back to 18.21.010 A3.a regarding the keeping of small animals: Used only for the purpose of propagation and culture and not for retail sales, including any number of poultry, rabbits, and similar small animals,

Also, any structures used to shelter chickens are prohibited in front yards, but allowed in other perimeter yards under the accessory building and structure development standards for that zone.  In CR-2 these Accessory Building setbacks are 50 feet from side and rear lot lines per 18.23.040C.2.b.

18.23.040 - Development standards—Accessory buildings and accessory structures.

C. Minimum distance standards:
1. To front lot line: Sixty feet;
2. To side and rear lot lines:
b. Fifty feet if building is used for poultry or animals,

Requests to increase lot coverage or reduce setbacks for accessory structures for chickens may be made through the Modification of Setback Requirements (MSR) or lot coverage limits process per Section 18.07.070 of the Pima County Zoning Code.

In our CR-2 zone you can have chickens, but you need to have a Modification to Setback Requirements (MSR) approved by Pima County zoning to put up a coop. Doing so requires, among other things, either sending a notice to owners of affected properties within 100 feet of yours, or the notice can be waived if written permission of affected owners is submitted with the request. According to the Pima County zoning office "An MSR can be approved if all required signatures from adjacent property owners are provided to staff OR  there are no objections during the fifteen day protest period if notices are sent by staff."
